Chessington Road

We are grateful to the family of the late Derek Phillips for their permission to use much of the text and images from the website that was set up and run by him. Derek was very interested in local history and his community and a short biography can be viewed on the introductory page.

A Collection of Photos of Chessington Road between Lansdowne Road and Ruxley Lane

The most notable change is the spur road to the new Chessington Road. The small bungalow (Danetree Cottage) was demolished to make way for Danetree Road.

There are a number of possible locations for this picture. I don't think that it is possible to know for sure which part of Chessington road is in the original photo; but my 2006 shot taken by the junction of Chessington Close seems to compare favourably.

When the original photo was taken in 1910 a steam railway ran just to the left of the photographer. The exact spot where the picture was taken is probably a few yards to the right of where I stood, but this would have left me standing in the middle of a dual carriageway.

This country scene of 1910 has changed considerably. Rather interestingly the tree in the distance seems to be on the wrong side of the road. Is it the same tree or has the original been cut down and another grown nearby?

Boring legal stuff relating to this page

As explained earlier the text and images for this page came from the website run by the late Derek Phillips. To preserve his work and allow ready access to it, it was decided to merge his local history pages into the Epsom and Ewell History Explorer website. Of necessity some minor changes to the text were necessary and the layout has been changed to fit in with the house style of Epsom and Ewell History Explorer but in essence the web page is Derek's.
