Thomas George Dunford was born in about 1854 in Kingston, Surrey, son of James and Sallie. In 1871 he was a baker's boy to William Shepherd at 15 Kingston Road, Ewell, which is the same shop that was later taken over by Henry Marks. He was then a journeyman baker/baker's assistant in West Street, Ewell. By 1901 he was a master baker with a bread and confectionery shop in Green Man Street, Ewell (now part of the High Street). The man on the left of the photo above may well be Thomas himself.

In 1875 Thomas married Fanny Waters of Ewell and they had five children. Thomas and Fanny both died in 1934, the former on 26 June (then living at 111 Kingston Road, Ewell).

Emily Louisa (born 1875) helped in the shop until 1908, when she married coachman John Henry Watkinson and moved to Ashtead; she died in 1954. Ernest (born 1877) was a carpenter; he married Ethel Holden of Banstead in 1905 and they had three sons, Lionel Eugene (born and died 1906), Noel Ernest (1908-1985) and Bernard Clifford (1911-78). Ernest died in 1920.

Frederick Thomas (born 1877) continued the family baking tradition in Ewell, but went bankrupt in 1904. However, his fortunes improved and at one stage he and his wife, Annie Elizabeth (née Payne) owned 33-39 High Street, Epsom, formerly 5-8 Town Cottages.

Florence Amy (1884) died unmarried in 1914. Winifred Alice (1892) married Walter Watkinson, a chauffeur. They had three children, who were Freda (1921), Bernard (born and died 1924) and Roy (1932-93).
