We are grateful to the family of the late Derek Phillips for their permission to use much of the Local History text and images from the website that was set up and run by him. To preserve Derek's work and allow ready access to it, it was decided to merge the vast majority of his local history pages into the Epsom and Ewell History Explorer website. Of necessity some minor changes to the text were necessary, some pages have been merged together and the layout has been changed to fit in with the house style of Epsom and Ewell History Explorer but in essence the web pages are Derek's.

Derek was very interested in local history and his community. He was the Residents' Association Councillor for Ruxley Ward in the Borough of Epsom & Ewell from May 2003 to December 2008. Prior to this Derek was the chairman for the West Ewell and Ruxley Residents' Association www.werra-uk.org.uk.

Born and brought up in West Ewell, Derek worked at the 'Rembrandt' cinema on the Ewell by-pass as a projectionist after leaving Ewell High School. From 1990 to 2006 Derek worked as an Audio-Visual Technician at Croydon College and then a media technician at the Whitgift School, also in Croydon.

Derek had a particular interest in the River Hogsmill and produced a DVD following its course and history from Ewell Village to where it joins the Thames in Kingston. This is still available from the Bourne Hall Museum Shop in Ewell.

Derek was a committed Christian and a member of West Ewell Evangelical Church www.weec.org.uk where he served as a youth leader and deacon. Derek's faith underpinned all that he did and was a great source of strength during his two year battle with cancer. He died on the 10th December 2008 aged 43. As a council colleague summed up so well: 'Derek was a man who loved his community, loved his family and loved God.'
